Introducing The Rifleman’s Museum

We are delighted to announce that the Royal Green Jackets (RIFLES) Museum in Winchester has been renamed The Rifleman’s Museum, marking the start of an exciting programme of redevelopment throughout 2025.
The redevelopment will focus on the area of the Museum currently displaying The Rifles collection, transforming the gallery into a space that explores how nearly three hundred years of rifle regiment history has shaped the modern regiment’s customs, traditions, and ethos.
Visitors will discover a refreshed entrance and shop area and a new RIFLES space which explains the 2007 formation, illustrates RIFLES customs and traditions, and highlights RIFLES operations. It will be designed to give serving Riflemen a better understanding of their unique heritage and to show the general public the consequent characteristics of the modern regiment, its involvement in recent operations and contribution to UK security.
The project is already underway, with construction and installation due to take place in the Museum later this year. We intend to keep the Museum open during as much of the project as possible, but encourage visitors to keep an eye on our new website (www.riflemansmuseum.co.uk) and social media for updates and news about any closures.
Our brand new website offers information about The Rifles, from the history of their proud traditions and anniversaries to updates on where battalions are stationed. You will see a new ‘Our Collection’ section which, when expanded, will allow visitors to explore elements of our collection online, featuring museum artifacts, archival photographs, and inspiring stories of courage.
We hope that when our new gallery is open to the public later in the year, it will allow us to tell the complete story of Riflemen from the very beginning through to the current day andprovide a community hub for serving and veteran Riflemen.
It’s important to us that the Museum is a place where Riflemen can see themselves reflected, and as such we are launching a project to capture RIFLES history. RIFLES battalions have been involved in several operations since the regiment’s formation in 2007. The museum would like to start collecting your stories with supporting photographs and other media, both for potential display and for archiving so that these records can be properly preserved. Please let us know if you have material that you think might form a part of the Regiment’s history.
These changes give The Rifles a valuable opportunity to explain how it operates and its contribution to the modern world, set in the unique and proud rifle regiment heritage from which it draws its approach, customs and traditions. We will need your help to raise the funds required and will be circulating design drawings later in March so you can be includedin the project.
If you have any questions on these developments, then please get in touch with the Curator ([email protected]) or Chair of the Museum Trust ([email protected]).
