Victory over Japan, VJ Day, came some three months after the fall of Nazi Germany and marked the final end of all fighting against the Axis powers. Not without reason, General Sir William Slim’s Army that continued this bitter campaign, an Army that included a huge proportion of soldiers from across the whole Commonwealth, became known in some circles as the “Forgotten Army”, which struggled against not only an implacable and often merciless enemy but also disease and the most taxing of climates.
